Happy Birthday, Hope!

Written by Jaye

One year ago today, at 8:29 at night, Hope Grace Howard was born to two very worn out, anxious, and joyful parents. She was also born to four grandparents dedicated to spoiling her, one adoring uncle and many, many loving and supportive family and friends. It was the culmination of nine months of tears, laughter, worry, wonderment, hope and prayer.

Surprise celebrating!!

Written by Carissa

This past weekend was filled with lots of celebrating for us and we had a blast! Jaye's birthday is on Feb. 14th (Valentine's Day) and this year I thought it'd be fun to surprise him with dinner at Miyabi (one of our favorites) with all his favorite people. I pulled off the surprise (he had no clue) and we had a really fun night! Unfortunately, I didn't get a big group picture, but here are some of our little family from dinner.

After dinner, we had everyone over for dessert at our place and completed the surprises with Jaye's gift...his Storm Trooper armor. Jaye has wanted armor for a long time now and he can't wait to start doing charity events with the 501st once he gets it all built and pieced together! Keep reading for pictures of Jaye unveiling his armor!!!

New Tricks

Written by Hope

So, while I was up last night, I figured out how to get onto this site. Dad left his laptop out and and within a few minutes I was on here. I don't think he'll mind, I got him wrapped already (I should be getting that pony pretty soon, too). Anyway, after nine months of second-hand articles about me, I thought my fans would like to hear it directly from the source!

Twenty Ten or Two Thousand Ten?

Written by Jaye

I don't really care. I like the sound of Twenty Ten. It follows the way I use to say Twenty Aught Nine last year. However you say the year's name, it doesn't cover up the fact that we've all been duped. Honestly, where is my flying car? My live-in robot maid or all the other push-button daily conveniences that were alluded to us back in the eighties and prior?

Christmas 2009

Written by Jaye

This Christmas was the first one with Hope and it has been a blast watching her experience all the season has to offer. Hope is now about nine months, so she really doesn't know what is going on. However, she has noticed the tree with lights and boxes with colored paper under it. Hope is at that age where the curiosity dial is set to eleven and so everything requires exploration and a taste test.

The ornaments on the tree were, of course, hung a little bit higher this year and a "safety wall" of faux presents forms a perimeter around the tree base. This worked pretty well but the wrapping paper didn't stand a chance on a couple of the boxes. This was to be expected. Hope loved playing with the boxes, the paper, the lights on the tree and some of the ornaments as well. She is at that stage where she is able to pull herself up into a standing position using sturdy objects. And sometimes less than sturdy items, like the fake presents under the tree.

Who Wants to Host Ducks TV? I Do!

Written by Jaye
Since the preseason started at the Honda Center, they've been running ads about a contest for fans to host Ducks TV. The show is an online video blog about the game and events of that night. Carissa kept telling me that I should enter. I figured I'd never get picked, but I entered anyway. You had to write a short essay about why you should host the show and submit a photo of yourself. So, I banged out a little ditty and attached a photo of Hope, Carissa and I taken during a game in all our Ducks garb. A few days later, a call came in from 714 area code.

Six Months

Written by Jaye

Hope is six months old. It seems like she has always been here, in a good way of course! I was thinking last night about all we have experienced and learned since she became part of the family...and there is so much more to go. Her personality and behavior patterns are starting to emerge and shine through daily. It's been a lot of work and many sleepless nights but I would not trade it for anything.

Life With Hope

  • Carissa Highly Opinionated... Written by Carissa

Well, we've always known that Hope is very smart and has a mind of her own, but lately she has been asserting her independence even more! Last week she found her scream...not just a little one, but a high-pitched "I didn't get my way" scream. YIKES! This morning, after waking up WAY too early and being full of trouble, she threw a full-blown temper-tantrum...complete with laying on the floor and kicking her feet. Where in the world did that come from? WHo teaches kids these things?!?!?

She continues to be quite the climber! This morning, It turned my head for a minute and when I turned around I found her sitting on the dining room table, getting into everything! She is attempting to scale our bookshelf now too...oh man! Over the weekend a new box of diapers came (thank you Amazon.com) and she pushed it against the wall into just the right spot so she could climb up on top and then proceed to turn the lights off and on.

Once again, this time for good, we've said "bye bye" to binks (pacifiers). I had put them away already about 2 months ago and at that point she could have cared less. However, she found one that had been forgotten and got so excited. I decided that since she didn't really "need" it, that I'd let her have it at bedtime only. Well, binks kept making themselves out of her crib and around the house and she started asking for it..."bii bii". I don't want her to become dependent on her bink to fall asleep so away they've gone. Last night was her 1st night without it and she was up at 4:30, 5, 5:30 and 6:15am...don't know if it is related to the lack of bink or just coincidence, but I sure hope tomorrow starts after 6:30!!

Hope's favorite food to eat and say is "cracker". If you ask her what she wants, 9 times out of 10 she'll quickly tell us "cracker". She does pretty well with eating fruits (non-pureed) and snacks, but I can't figure out how to get her to eat veggies. She'll now eat blueberries, raspberries, grapes, watermelon, strawberries, peaches, and pears. I keep trying little sandwhiches (pbj, meat & cheese) but she has decided she wants nothing to do with them. (I even cut them in cute shapes) She'll eat chicken and chicken nuggets, cheese, and a few gerber pasta meals, but I am still trying to figure out how to get more protein in her diet. I caved and bought veggie puree baby food yesterday and I am really hoping we can stop buying it soon...but for now, she'll eat it and she gets her veggies. What's a Mom to do?!?!
